Telephone penetration in Tambov began in the late nineteenth century. In 1897 the Minister of Internal Affairs of Russia officially approved installation of a public telephone network in Tambov. In 1902 there were 137 telephone lines in the city. 775 telephone sets were registered in Tambov governmental network as of January 1, 1916.

In Soviet times, authorities supported development of telephone communications in Tambov and the region. A big step towards this was made in 1981-1985 when 443 kilometers of regional long distance cable telecommunications lines and a number of new telephone exchanges were put into operation.

The nineties became a period of significant positive changes in the Tambov telecommunications sector. Tambov's branch managed not only to retain its leading technological and economic positions but also develop new and promising business directions. Reorganization carried out in the branch starting in 1996 contributed significantly to this. For instance, liquidation of unprofitable district divisions which were attached to efficient ones was one of the radical steps in this direction; it considerably increased management efficiency and allowed reduced administrative staff. Actually reorganization initiated in 1990s prepared Tambovskaya Electrosvyaz, the branch's predecessor, to join CenterTelecom, an inter-regional telecommunications company operating in the Central Federal District.

In accordance with a decision of the annual general meeting of the shareholders of Tambovskaya Electrosvyaz OJSC held February 13, 2002 the company was reorganized and attached to CenterTelecom OJSC. On December 1, 2002 Tambovskaya Electrosvyaz joined CenterTelecom along with 16 telecommunications operators of Central Federal District. In accordance with the decision of the annual general meeting of the shareholders of Tambovskaya Electrosvyaz OJSC on June 11, 2004 the company was renamed to Tambov branch of CenterTelecom OJSC.

These steps as well as technical modernization of the company have had a positive impact on Tambov branch development, its service quality and the growth of economic indicators.
